A Slice From Adrianna's Life
Addicted...

For a number of years now I've stayed away from series television and congratulated myself for doing so. Last month I caved in. A sad fact. I swore off series back when the networks discontinued Beauty & the Beast, and then Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, for what I considered really stupid reasons and I gave up on series. And I've been sooo good. Not even Moonlight or Buffy or Angel could lure me back to series television although I'd catch the odd episode now and again.

Then I spotted Torchwood on BBC. Bad news. I watched several episodes from the first season and then what happened? I made a point of watching the season opener last weekend. Bad mistake because I really find myself liking th show. My fast is broken. I know I am so in trouble now. But I certainly expect that now I've given in, the network will probably cancel it. There's a good and bad to that, I guess. I can return to my "no series television" mode. But then I'll be really ticked off to lose another decent show and boycott for another ten or fifteen years.

Guess where I'll be this Saturday night? There's just no winning.

The Wolf Festival...
by Adrianna Dane

Before the celebration of Valentine's Day as we know it today, there was a pagan celebration that ran from February 13th through February 15th, taking its roots from the very early foundations of Rome, and known as the Feast of Lupercalia, a festival of the wolf. This celebration apparently took place to help destroy any clinging evil spirits, cleansing and purifying the city, and providing health and feritility to its citizens.

It is believed to be a festival that honors the she-wolf who nurtured the founders of Rome, the infant orphans, Romulus and Remus. Mythology holds that the twins are the sons of the god, Mars, and a woman sentenced to remain chaste, Rhea Silvia.

The festivities were administrated by the Luperic, or brothers of the wolf. Possibly in honor of the twin natures of these leaders, the celebrations are overseen by two schools of priests, apparently a quite atypical practice for the times. These two divisions were know as: the Luperci Quintilii (with the foundation from Romulus) and the Luperci Fabii (representing Remus).

It is speculated that this pagan celebration is related to the worship of Lycaean Pan, but others indicate that it is not a festival related to one particular god or goddess.

According to history, in 494, Pope Gelasius I finally suppressed the feast and in its place instituted the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary.

Ultimately, it is speculated that this festival representations of the foundations of Valentine's Day as we now celebrate this romantic day for lovers.
